National Geographic

Student Project

During my time in school, we were tasked with creating a project based off of something we were passionate about. I decided to design an edition of National Geographic that focused on sharks and also included an infographic that the reader would open and learn more about the sharks anatomy. I chose sharks because of my love for the ocean and its ecosystem, as well as debunking the many myths that comes along with how sharks operate. I got the copy for my magazine design from ocean.si.edu.

The front of the magazine was designed based on previous editions that had been published. However, I wanted the main focus of the imagery to be on the shark, with additional imagery where people attmepted to connect with it. The opening spread, along with the other spreads, focus on the imagery while having the copy being secondary. This was done purposefully to create a more impactful experience for the reader.

In order to get to the infographic part of the magazine, the reader was asked “What’s behind the coral reef?” This was to create an interactive aspect to the magazine, having the reader manually get past the coral reef to access the infographic. All the sharks were illustrated using Procreate, with the main designing happening in InDesign.
